About the Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever was created in Great Britain in the 1800's as a game retrieving dog.

Today, Goldens are used for a variety of purposes such as companion dogs, guide dogs, field trials, and service dogs.

Lovable and always happy are words that describe the Golden Retriever best. These spunky dogs love to please their owners are are very easy to train. They do great with children and other animals and their sweet disposition makes them an ideal family pet. Although they generally love everyone, they will alert their owners to the presence of a stranger. They do tend to have a lot of energy so activities that incorporate endurance are ideal for them. If left unattended for long periodsof time or if seperated from the family these dogs can become troublesome. They do best when given tasks to do such as hunting, retrieving or performing activities. These dogs are also great swimmers so if you are near water they are likely to jump right in.

Goldens have beautiful almond shaped dark brown eyes with ears that lay close to the face. Their nose is either black or brownish brown. Having a muscular neck, sturdy shoulders and a straight, level top line is the form that a Golden should strive for. They have a tail that is thick at the base and narrows as it lengthens with a slight curve when raised. Their legs are stong and muscular as they extend into their medium sized compact feet with thick toe pads. These dogs have a double coat which helps to protect them from the different elements of the weather. Their undercoat is very dense and is somewhat water resistant while the outer coat is firm and lies close to the body. The legs, abdomen and tail have a natural feathering to them while the frot of the legs and face are smooth with short hair. The color of the coat caries depending on the individual dog however it is not uncommon for the feathering to be a lighter shade of gold than the rest of the coat. Any shades of gold are acceptable with moderate white spots being allowed.

The most common diseases this breed is prone to are dysplasia, eye problems, heart problems, and allergies.

Although these dogs will do well in an apartment or in a house, Goldens do require a sufficient amount of daily exercise to keep them active and occupied. Daily walks and regular games of retrieving will make this breed happy for hours at a time.
